Sensory Processing and Learning: What Parents Often Miss
Most parents come to us asking about attention, reading, or math. Far fewer come in asking about sensory processing — even though it's often woven into the very struggles they're describing.
A child who melts down over scratchy clothing tags, can't sit still on a carpet square, or seems "too sensitive" to noise isn't just being difficult. And a child who seeks out constant movement, crashes into furniture, or chews on pencils and sleeves isn't just being wiggly. These are sensory patterns — and when they go unrecognized, they can look a lot like attention problems, anxiety, or behavioral defiance, even when something else is driving them underneath.
What Sensory Processing Actually Means
Sensory processing is the way the brain receives, organizes, and responds to information coming in through the senses — not just sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell, but also two senses people rarely think about: the vestibular sense (balance and movement) and proprioception (body awareness in space).
For most kids, this happens automatically and invisibly. The brain filters out the hum of the refrigerator, registers a tap on the shoulder as gentle, and knows how much pressure to use when picking up a pencil. For a child with sensory processing differences, that filtering and calibration doesn't happen smoothly. The input can arrive too loud, too intense, too unpredictable — or barely register at all.
How It Shows Up in Daily Life and School
Sensory processing differences don't always look the way people expect. They can show up as:
Over-responsiveness: distress over tags, seams, food textures, loud rooms, or unexpected touch; covering ears at ordinary noise levels; avoiding messy play
Under-responsiveness: not noticing pain, temperature, or hunger the way peers do; seeming "checked out" or slow to respond
Sensory seeking: constant movement, crashing into things, chewing on non-food items, touching everything, craving spinning or jumping
Difficulty with body awareness: clumsiness, trouble with handwriting, poor spatial judgment, bumping into people or objects
In a classroom, this can translate into a child who can't stay seated during circle time, melts down during fire drills, avoids the cafeteria because it's too loud, or seems unable to focus because their body is quietly working overtime just to manage the sensory environment around them.
Why It Gets Missed — or Misread
Sensory processing differences are frequently mistaken for something else entirely. A child who can't sit still might be labeled as having attention problems. A child who avoids group activities might be labeled anxious or oppositional. A child who struggles with handwriting might be assumed to have a pure motor or learning issue.
Sometimes these labels are accurate on their own. Often, though, sensory processing is part of the picture and gets left out of it — particularly because sensory differences frequently co-occur with ADHD, autism spectrum conditions, and anxiety, rather than existing in isolation. Without looking at the sensory piece specifically, it's easy to treat only part of what's going on.
Why an Evaluation Helps
A comprehensive evaluation looks at the whole child — attention, learning, emotional functioning, and yes, sensory and regulatory patterns — rather than treating each behavior as a separate, unrelated problem. Understanding whether sensory processing is contributing to what a child is experiencing changes what actually helps: a sensory-aware seating plan, movement breaks, noise-reducing accommodations, or occupational therapy referral can make more of a difference than most behavioral approaches alone.
